Basic Design

Check out this link from walsworth yearbooks. This is a great example of beginning yearbook design. Practice on paper and create your own design! Use random photos or photos cut out from a magazine. Also put placeholder text where text will be placed. Practice with not having trapped text and notice white space and how much/little looks best.

Being a Summer Yearbooker

Hey, Ybookers!
So, I hope that you guys are as excited for next year as I am! While you are enjoying your summer, if you come across some free time, it would be good for you to keep working on your yearbooking skills!

Here are some ideas:

Pick up a camera!
Even if it's not a DSLR, but a digital camera, USE IT! It doesn't matter what quality the photo turns out to be, as long as you are playing with the angle of the shot and practicing using the rule of thirds!
For new yearbookers- research "rule of thirds," as you will be using this LOTS next year. Also, if you get a chance to pick up a DSLR, practice in MANUAL! (see Fstop, WhiteBalance, Shutterspeed)

Read a magazine!
Take a day to relax and read your favorite magazine! While reading it, make note of WHY the design of the page looks good to your eye. If something really stands out to you, cut it out or mark the page and bring it to the Boot Camp or into class! Looking at professional design and making a mock page based on it is how most people create great designs. Find inspiration from somewhere!

Keep a journal!
Look up how to write in yearbook style (captions and copy). Though this is a unique style, it is important to keep correct grammar and English throughout the summer. Learn new words, write a story, play with different ideas. The most important part about writing in yearbook style is that you tell a STORY in an exciting way. Remember that your peers will be looking back on this in 20 years and they want to remember the exciting and most memorable times in high school. Just writing something such as, "Our volleyball team went to state and did well," isn't going to bring back very many memories. This is because there isn't anything special about the statement. Well yeah, they went to state and that's pretty cool, but you want to include things that are going to spark that special memory. If you can take your copy and place it into another school's book and it makes sense, it is NOT good copy. We are here to record the unique parts of our school that make us different from the rest.

Have a fun and safe summer and don't forget to keep being a journalist throughout the summer :)
